...on surveys/census? I am of arab descent (lebanese mostly),i have dark brown hair (looks black) and olivish skin. and its a big part of my life that i'm arab, from food to music to culture in general, i am both american and arab in lifstyle, but 100% middle eastern in heritage. whenever i have a survey to fill out and it asks "what race?" it has all these choices including pacific islander, Caucasian/white, hispanic (from latin america or spain or something), native american, black, other.i used to check white until recently, now i just check 'other' even though i know that does not agree with american gov. this is because i always saw minorities who checked different things on surveys having these special oppurtunites, and asked myself why don't i get the same thing for being arab?
if the U.S. gov considers me white...ok, but shouldn't i at least get the benefit of checking my ethnicity under white? shouldn't they have "white" and then indent on it and put some possible ethnicities, i.e. western european, eastern european, or middle eastern? they have this for hispanics
the reason i say this is because, while i genearlly dont encounter much discrimination, i am still affected by it and have adjust things about my life in order to avoid it. by putting me just under "white" and not further elaborating, its almost like they completely disregard this part, and i could be anything from german to North African...and well we all know that germans and north africans are not looked at the same. if i am going to need to fear discrimination/be treated as a minority in real life, shouldn't i get the benefit of being a minority when it comes to applications? or is it just me that thinks that way?
