I agree with you there.
Abusing the power of CGI when it comes to animation does make the art seem a little generic and a little more on the negative side.
However, it does sort of depend on how well they do with the CG animation, for example, I thought the CG animation used to make the Final Fantasy movies were great and also Pixar used it well, like you stated.
Overall, I prefer 2D though, it make the animation seem more authentic.
