Do you still need a data plan with Tmobile if your phone is unlocked from ebay?

I want to buy a G1 from ebay because I can't buy a phone with them for $399. I want to know do you still have to have their data plan if you already have voice plan which includes the web?
Its not that big of a deal but I want to know what i'll pay monthly before I buy the phone. I really hate talking to t-mobile customer service so I appreciate the help
