Do you need wifi to tirn on your ipod touch bluetooth and connect with another ipod?

I want to do that bluetooth thing with my friends iphone and i have a ipod touch 3g,, do i need to have wifi do be able to connect with the iphone?? i have wifi but at my house im planning to do this at school,,
