Do you need to output signal from your tv in order to record with an HD PVR ?

I have a weird tv that can have 1080i/p signal put in, but can only output 480p.... I want to buy an hd pvr to record gameplay, but dont want to waste money I cant record in hd..... PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!! I will love you forever.....
