Do you need to major in English to teach English in high school?

Hey,

I'm going off to college next year, and i REALLY like sociology but i wanna teach english in high school later. Do you need to major in english to teach english? (can i just take courses/minor in it)

Also how does the teacher credentials work in california? Is it a masters degree? Is it just some teaching license? How long does it take to get?
