Do you need to have those roll bars in the back of the Jeep?

Can you take the bars off the rear of a Jeep wrangler, because I hate the way they look and would love to remove them if it's not like illegal or anything.
Oh and by the way, if it's not safe or anything then I won't do it. But I don't plan on driving the jeep upside down.
