Do you need a sharp blade to cook well?

I recently started to cook more and more, but I use a dull blade (dull enough that you need to rock back and forth or press really hard for it to slice through veggies). I get very intimidated with sharp knives.. I am quite clumsy so I worry that I'll cut myself, or that it might somehow bounce off the chopping board and land on my feet. lol
