It's about this girl who lives in colonial times. Or so she thinks. When her mother falls deathly ill, she tells her daughter the truth about their lives: they live in a museum of sorts, authentically living in colonial times with no access to the outside world. In order to save her mother, the girl must break out of this museum, into the real world, to find the medicine to cure her.
Do you know what book this is? I've wracked my brain for months now, but I probably read this about 8 years ago. One of my friends confirmed that this isn't some fruit of my overactive imagination; she also recalls the story, but can't remember the name of the book or the author.
