Tourism has been record-breaking in Israel in 2010, with some 1.6 million people visiting between January and July, according to figures released by the Ministry of Tourism on Monday. That number is 39 percent more than during the same period in 2009, and 10% more than in 2008, the year with the highest recorded number of tourists.
Ministry of Tourism estimates show that income from tourists – not including flights in and out of the country – was measured at approximately $1.55 billion in the first half of 2010. The most visitors are currently from the United States, Russia, Germany, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom.
Jerusalem has been named the best city in the region of Africa and the Middle East by New York-based Travel and Leisure magazine. Tel Aviv ranks third.
