Do you have to use low profile tires on 17 inch rims?

I don't KNOW for sure, but maybe if you put regular tires on 17" wheels they wouldn't FIT into the wheel well. The thing might look like a monster truck......
 
I bought a 2005 scion xB last week and it has 17 inch rims with low profile tires. I really do not like the feel of low profile tires (you feel every single bump in the road!) - do I have to sell my rims and then buy normal size tires or can I keep these 17 inch ones and put tires on them that are a regular thickness? thanks!
