Verizon requires the $30/month data plan with all smart phones and at least the $10/month 25mb data plan for all but the most basic phones.

yes. that is the downside to smartphones but there is a data plan required for all smartphones. if you are not looking to use the internet much or download stuff there are a few phones that they offer that are smartphones that don't require a data plan but most do because even if you are not on the net, the phone will still access the web and at $.99/MB, you don't want that bill!
