Do you have to have AT&T for an iPhone, or can you use something else like Verizon?

I'm getting an iPhone soon, since I can't call or take pictures with my iPod Touch. I heard that you can only use at&t with an iPhone, is it true? Or can I use Metro PCS or Verizon Wireless?
