Do you have to have a scholarship to play a sport in college?

I've always wanted to play Softball for the UNC Tar Heels. I have no idea why. I played Slow Pitch for 10 years,and all through High School I'm playing for the school team which is fast pitch.

So do you need a scholarship to play or are there tryouts?
