Do you have to have a data plan with a sidekick from tmobile?

I have the samsung highlight, and it is broke Beyond repair. My mom DIDN'T get insurance on it so i cant buy a new one. so i was thinking about getting a sidekick, but we have no data plan. will the sidekick still work?
