Do you have to format new compact flash memory cards before using them?

Someone please help :) I don't want to take loads of photos with my new memory card and then discover they have to be erased :(

It's a 8gb lexar platinum ii compact flash card if that helps at all.

Not anymore typically.

Back in the day they would ship memory cards in FAT, and some cameras only recognized FAT16 or FAT32. Now a days the camera typically has a auto-format that it does the first time the card is inserted (To create the hierarchy of the picture / video storage). Most CF cards typically use FAT16 if memory serves.
