Do you have to be sore for a long time after weight lifting to progress?

The first time I weight lifted, I was sore for almost the whole next day afterwards.
Now when I weight lift, I'm only sore for a few minutes after I weight lift.
Do you have to be sore for the whole next day in order to progress your muscles, or is being sore for a few minutes enough to progress?
