do you have to actually register and pay for the midnight madness bike marathon in

san diego? i know the website says you can pre register or register on the day. and its like 30. but i was wondering if i can just show up with my bike and ride without paying or registering cuz my friend said you can. it would help to hear from people who have actually been to it before. thanks.
