Do you find chase scenes in animation hilarious?

I do most of the time, if it's done pretty well. Shows like Pucca manage to crack me up just from her trying to catch Garu (And usually succeeding). Now for stuff like Scooby Doo, not so much.

I still think one of the funniest chase scenes in recent animation history was from "The Simpsons", in Season 3's "Separate Vocations". The exploding milk truck gets me every time.

"Damn boxes!"

One of my favorites was season 4's "Homer the Heretic", where Homer is chased by Flanders and family, who want him to go to church. Homer speeds to get past an upcoming train, and thinks he's lost them. But then Flanders miraculously manages to shoot his car through an open boxcar door while the train is moving and keep the pace, prompting Homer to slam his fist on the wheel in annoyance. So ridiculous.

Haha, one of my all time favorite lines. Oh, and then Wiggum utters this gem:

Chief Wiggum to an unconscious Snake: Looks like you just bought yourself a lottery ticket. To jail!

Eddie: I think he's unconscious, Chief.

Wiggum: Ah, they can still hear things.

I didn't think they were meant to be funny... Always thought chase scenes were adventure genre not comedy genre... Well i guess theres this one scene in Stickin' Around where Russell keeps falling down which is funny

They can be. On the other hand, they can just be timekillers. It largely depends on how the characters interact with themselves and their environment.

For example, there were a lot of old HB cartoons where the chase scene amounted to '45 seconds of the main character running past the same rock/cactus/window while talking to himself', then diving behind cover. Not all that interesting.

Yes they are comedies. The chase scenes are an element of the shows, not the entire show (Road Runner even has the scenes with just Wile E Coyote building his contraptions and lures which can have humour too). Chase scenes can be both for comedic or regular purposes, but mostly they, at least to my knowledge, are used for adventurous purposes, like a car chase, rather than purely for comedy

This is another good example of the interaction principle I mentioned above. There's a big difference between 'two people on foot, one of them steps on a shovel and gets smacked in the face and goes *boing*' to 'two guys in cars narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic'. They can be used for both.

Which is why i said not all chase scenes have to be comedic, and also why the thread title doesn't make much sense. If it said 'do you find chase scenes that try to be funny funny' then sure it'd make sense, but chase scenes, not all of them necessarily being for humorous purposes, is a rather broad term. That's all i'm saying.

Really depends.

And shame on you people for not mentioning the grand-daddy of all well-made chase sequences: The chase scene in The Castle of Cagliostro. There's something magical about how Lupin and Jigen's car can defy physics, ride a wall then make it to the top.

Depends on the cartoon. Road Runner cartoons had great chase sequences. Heckle & Jeckle, on the other hand, used pretty much the same chase sequence so many times that it became dull, boring, and unfunny.

A lot depends on the skill of the writers and director. Even an old joke can get laughs, it just depends on how you tell it. :D

I think that it all depends on how its handled as well. Chase scenes in cartoons like with the Road Runner can be funny, but if it isn't handled in the right way, it would feel more like something to kill time in the show instead of something funny.

I would have to agree with Light Lucario, but another point I'd like to make is that it also depends what led up to the chase that determines it's funniness. NASCAR-ish chases for no reason makes no sense what so ever. But as L.L and others had said Road Runner is always funny.

I remember Tom and Jerry chase scenes as particularly funny.

Scooby and Shaggy made for some giggle-induced moments when they dressed up as various people, and would try to throw the villian off. I always wondered why they didn't just unmask the guy there. :p

Tom and Jerry chasing scenes used to make me laugh so hard when I was younger. I did like Road Runner chasing scenes as well, it really has some moments every now and then, Scooby Doo chasing scenes is really popular as it used on Johnny Bravo, Fairy Odd Parents, etc. I never found it to be hilarious, though. I only found it to be hilarious on A Pup name Scooby Doo :D.

I still think the climax to the Disney short "Commando Duck (1944)" is one the most awesome chase scenes ever put on film, let alone animated.
