Or are men just naturally superficial and would never appreciate women's personalities and characters more than their sex and beauty regardless of how interesting women became?

We can be superficial, but the person I can have the most (non-sexual) fun with is my girlfriend, and she was just a friend for ages beforehand so it depends on the situation.

In my opinion most men are simply looking for a fertile mate who will produce good looking children. So they're obviously going to want someone they find attractive.

When they get older and they are no longer interested in reproducing, they might look beyond the superficial in order to find a suitable companion to spend the rest of their lives with.

You could also ask the same thing about women being more interested in a man's money rather than his personality. Women will go after men who have money so that he can provide for her and her children.

This is all very primal and is not to say that any woman or man won't be more interested in the substance of a person rather than what he or she has to offer on a superficial level.
