I have always been of the mentality that college faculty who have received tenure "retire on the job". What do I mean by "retiring on the job"? I mean that people who get tenure feel that because of their job security, that they no longer have to work as hard find this unacceptable when people in business and industry have to work hard everyday or else risk being fired. I also have a serious problem with the whole notion that college faculty who have tenure can "get away with murder" by speaking out or saying anything without fearing any repercussions. This is tyranny at best. Another problem that I have with the whole notion of tenure is that it makes it extremely difficult to eliminate faculty when programs are shrinking in hard economic times. In business and industry, companies have no problem with laying off employees during hard economic times. Why should faculty be treated special with tenure?
