Do you eat canned foods that are past their "Best by" date?

I really hate the thought of wasting food, and I don't want to give these cans of food to food drives because I don't know if they're safe. I won't eat this stuff because I am really scared of what may be growing in it. I don't know how it happens but sometimes I find things in my parents' cupboards that are 2-3 years past their "best if used by" dates. Does anybody else keep these? Do you use them? What is the oldest thing you have eaten? What happened?
