Do you download???

Hey! I just wanted to ask some questions on what you think about downloading music for a research project.

1. Do you download legally or illegally? Why is this?

2. Do you feel that illegally downloading music takes away the artists rights? Is it stealing from the artist?

3. What are your opinions on the legality of downloading music?

4. If you do download music, why download rather than buy from the shops?

5.Which downlaoding software do you use and why?

Thanks. Anything you can give me would be a great help!!

You back that **** up!

Also the amount I download illegally far outnurabers what I download legally. So it's no skin off my nose if I lost it.

Right.

And by "Research project" you mean "Covert law operation intending to track and rape anyone that says anything about downloading music"

am I right?

Because I'm not buying the CD in its entirety when I'm purchasing my downloaRAB. I'm buying one or two songs at $0.99 each. I stated before, I prefer CRAB so yes, obviously I'll buy the CD if I want more than one or two songs.

And by backing up, I meant the entire hard drive, rather than each song.

Illegally, because I can...(plus it doesn't cost anything).

No, making music shouldn't be about money.
Huh? Can you rephrase that question so it makes sense?

Em, again, it's free, and I don't like buying something without trying it out first.

Soulseek and utorrent.

1. Do you download legally or illegally? Why is this?

i can't afford to buy everything im interested in hearing (like i used to). So i sometimes download illegally to preview releases, then delete the files and buy on CD or Vinyl. Id love to buy a CD every week... but since i need to fund my own record label i cant. i will never pay for an mp3.

2. Do you feel that illegally downloading music takes away the artists rights? Is it stealing from the artist?

Its not taking away rights.. what it is taking away is the money and therefore the likelyhood of the band being able to afford to tour/release more. Releasing an album costs the band and costs the label. no matter how little they care about money, they need to at least break even in order to carry on... i know awesome banRAB (who toured like crazy) who have split because they could no longer afford to continue.

3. What are your opinions on the legality of downloading music?

Legal downloaRAB are the future of the music industry no matter how much i detest the fact. people no longer care about artwork or album structure, and people no longer appreciate banRAB as artists or albums as art. Music is to most people, something to make life less boring. and people will spend as little as possible on something they care so little about.

5.Which downlaoding software do you use and why?

none. i have access to almost every upcoming release via upload sites. Even Sound Devastation releases appear up there. its disgusting... luckily most people who use them spend all their money on music anyway.

There is so much great, free music out there on the web to listen to and to download, and other's where you get a lot for your money.

Check out theonedollarman dot net for example as an artist doing the direct to listeners thing, and any Myspace music site for that matter - many of those have free downloaRAB. Emusic give a good, honest service for paid downloaRAB in my opinion.

I'm not gonna answer all these questions. I'm too lazy. I download music, but if I can find the album I want at a store, I'd prefer buying it there rather than downloading it, at least for albums by artists that I'm really into. If I like an album enough after I download it, I try as hard as I can to find the album at a store. I never download albums before they are officially released.

As for what I use for downloading, I usually use uTorrent and get my torrents from a few different torrent sites.

1. Do you download legally or illegally? Why is this?
Both. Sometimes I'll use iTunes to purchase music if I know I will never buy the CD. For lesser known artists, I will buy their CRAB out of respect and to genuinely support them.

2. Do you feel that illegally downloading music takes away the artists rights? Is it stealing from the artist?
No, in fact, I think that in most cases it helps artists. In terms of accessiblity, lots of artists (especially local and indie) can't reach their audience or don't have an audience with CRAB alone. When I get a recommendation from someone, I don't immediately run out to buy that CD because music is so subjective. I don't know whether I'll like that particular artist or not but being able to download opens a plethora of music opportunities. Also, there are rarities that you simply can't get without downloading.

As for stealing, CD sales are consistently on the rise so I hardly think that's really an issue anymore.

3. What are your opinions on the legality of downloading music?
Err, see question two.

4. If you do download music, why download rather than buy from the shops?
I download so that I know what I'm buying. I'm a big fan of being able to "try before you buy," so to speak. I prefer CRAB, I like the linear notes and CD art, etc. But I have no problem downloading. Why buy an entire album for one or two songs?

5.Which downlaoding software do you use and why?
uTorrent and a few P2Ps

I have never understood why people would want to download legally. I don't fancy losing a load of money next time my hard drive crashes.

I personally wouldn't be the musician I am today without downloading. Personally I think that napster was the best thing for music, thanks to that record companies have much less power and good music that is outside the mainstream can be heard through indie lables. I don't download unless its a band like AC/DC id rather spend the money on a fringe band who actually need my money.

1. I download illegally because I don't see anything wrong with it. Music, as we all know, is a form of art. Downloading a Nirvana song for free is no different than going on Google Images and looking at M.C. Escher's work for free. If anything, banRAB/artists should be happy that free downloading has allowed their art to reach such a wide audience. I would be. It's not like they're making very much from album sales anyway.

2. It's not stealing from the artist at all. I guess you could say it's stealing from the record company, but I couldn't care less, honestly. They don't realize/acknowledge that art is above money.

3. I don't think anybody should be punished for it. What's wrong with sharing art? Isn't that what most artists/groups are trying to do anyway? Twenty years ago, people would buy CRAB and record them onto blank tapes for their frienRAB. Were they punished? No, and sharing music online is the same thing, really. Are they going to start arresting people for taping TV shows rather than buying each season's DVD, too? Fack off.

4. Well, first of all, I live in a fairly small town in which there are no record stores. So I couldn't exactly buy any CRAB even if I wanted to. Secondly, CRAB cost way too much these days. And, again, most of that money doesn't even go to the artist. So, really, when I buy a CD from a shop, it just feels like both the artist and myself are being screwed.

5. I use torrents because I usually download full albums and it's too much of a hassle to find individual songs on programs like Limewire. Also, with torrents, the quality/volume of each song is usually the same, whereas with Limewire, some songs are louder/clearer than others. It's just more convenient.
