Do you consider Photography / Photo Manipulations Art?

I am confused as to how I feel about Photography. I have been getting into Photography and have been doing PhotoManipulations (using Photoshop). My works are quite good and imaginative. In other words, can I call myself an Artist!? Or am I just creating technological works?

I would call you an Artist if your work is original (not a manipulation of someone else's efforts... which is illegal).

Manipulation of Photos is not uncommon and nearly every photographer does to some extent both inside the viewfinder with perspective, composition and exposure control and outside by adjusting colors, saturation and other 'darkroom' techniques on a digital scale.

Purists argue that Digital Manipulation is a curse to photography because the digital photographer doesn't have to do things in the dark. Well, duh. I think this is a mute issue and now that I don't have all those brown plastic collapsed bottles in my basement (methyl-ethyl bad s__t as described by Haz Mat Technicians), I'm happy.

Yes, you are an artist. Photography takes skill, in order to capture the right photos you need to have a good eye, which is what artists have. I believe, however, photo manipulation is being used to make up for photography that is not so.. great. I think its useful, but shouldnt count as much as the photo itself.

Art is in the eye of the artist. If you feel like its art, like its something that you created, then its art. Photography is an art form as well albeit there is not as much pure talent involved. Before the digital age, it was definitely more of an art form in developing film and adjusting exposures and such with chemicals... Stuff I know little to nothing about. Its not that its not art now, its just a little more demystified.

Yes, especially photo manipulation. Art does not require paint and brush. You are using your creativity to make a unique image that reflects your imagination. The tool you use doesn't matter.
