For instance, we have a patron by the name of John. He is exiting out of the hotel. While he is doing this, he notices that there's a long trail of people behind him who are just about to leave the hotel like he is. As courteous as John is, he happily opens the door for them. But, the people who are leaving don't even leave a thanks. This kind of confuses John as he was expecting some kind of thank you or appreciation. As he continues on his life to open doors for people, he never gets a thanks. Very rare for this to occur without a thanks from a single patron. However, it's possible to happened and he just slowly doesn't open the door for people anymore. Weird example, but just wanted to hint you a message I was trying to explain.
Some people who are generally nice treat everyone with respect and decent courteousy. But, then everyone else treats him back like crap on a continuous basis. This will not garner much respect for others anymore.
A philosopher once stated that if you were to have a human being born on an island without anything (people, social environment) aside from the basic necessities needed for life, that human being will grow up to be "good" in a general sense.
