According to the hadith the prophet Muhammad (saw) allowed the killing of woman and children during nocturnal attacks (night raids).
In the Seige of taif the prophet Muhammad (saw) reportedly used Ballistics (catapults) against the enemy.
Sheikh Al Shuaybi says that the prophet Muhammad therefore acknowledged that non combatants may be killed and allowed indiscriminate killings.
When woman and children were killed in such attacks the prophet said: “They are from them”." – [Sahih Muslim 19:4321]
??????????????????????????????????????
There are hadith where the prophet forbade killing woman, but scholars say he forbade it not because they are non combatants, but because its better to take them as slaves, as the prophet took Banu Qurayza as slaves
?Shayk ul Islam Ibn Taymiyaah says:
Some [jurists] are of the opinion that all of them may be killed, on the mere ground that they are unbelievers, but they make an exception for women and children since they constitute "property for Muslims".

Ghazali said: "Kitab al-wagiz fi fiqh madhab al-Imam al-Safi'i":
"irfi:One must go on jihad [i.e., warlike razzias or raids] at least once a year...One may use a catapult against them [non-Muslims] when they are in a fortress, even if among them are women and children.. One may set fire to them and/or drown them...If a person of the ahl al-kitab [People of the Book] is enslaved, his marriage is [automatically] revoked...One may cut down their trees "
The prophet reportedly cut down the trees of the Banu Nadir (it seems muslims are confused about whether trees may be cut, partly because they have only been exposed to a watered down version of islam)
