Immediate Consequences of the Russian Revolution
THESIS STATEMENT: The immediate consequences of the Russian revolution negatively affected the country of Russia.
I.The abdication of Czar Nicholas II presented Russia with many consequences.
A.Provisional government was established- Lenin took over in 8 months
B.Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (1918) - surrendered land to Germany, people were angry and objected. This led to the civil war.
C.Civil war (1918-1920)- Red Bolsheviks vs. White Army, Bolsheviks won. 14 million Russians died, and there was much destruction.
II.When Lenin suffered a stroke in 1922, Stalin, the “man of steel”, began his climb to the head of the government.
A.Stalin took control in 1928 and sent Leon Trotsky into exile because he was seen as a threat.
B.Stalin aimed for communism- so he created a totalitarian state (controlled every aspect of life)- arrested and executed millions of so- called traitors.
C.Stalin turned against the communist party and created the Great purge (1934-1938) - he eliminated anyone who threatened his power (8-13 million deaths) and he gained complete control of the soviet government and the communist party.
