do u have to be in the same chat room to talk to eachother?

If the other person says it is ok then you can talk via Instant Message and you don't have to even be in a chat room at all. It is best to ask somebody before you IM them unless they are already your friend.
Yes, you have to be in the same chat room as the other person that you want to chat with. How else would you know that the other person is even there? If there is a lot of people in one chat room and you want to talk to one person in private so that the others can't see what you are talking about, then you can invite that person into a private chat room. The other person just needs to accept and then you can talk with each other in private. Have fun chatting!

P.s. You can chat with your contacts in your address book/ contact list via IM and that chat window is then just viewable by that person only. You can do conference chats though too by inviting several people into the same IM chat window. For that you have to point your mouse on one contact and right click it then click on " More Actions" then click " Invite to a conference". It will open up a window where you can choose on the left which contacts you would like to have in that conference then click "Add" and then on the bottom on "Invite".
You can also "Enable Voice for this conference" by checking the box beside it before you click on "invite".
