Do "Turn off your mobile" adverts work?

I went to see The White Ribbon in a smart independent cinema yesterday evening. During the film several people's mobiles rang, including one that was on silent but vibrated loudly. One man actually answered his phone! It's a fairly quiet film, with no incidental music, so you could hear the phones very clearly.

The cinema in question didn't show a "turn off your mobile" message before the film. Would it have made any difference, or are some people just too arrogant to bother about their fellow audience members?

I turn mine off anyway, not down to this advert though - but I think most people tend to ignore it a not that i hear mobiles alot during films but I see them light up randomly around the cinema when people are using them.

On another note, those Orange adverts used to be so funny, but they're just rubbish now. Tht one with Sigourney Weaver is it? Just crap.

I thin they act well as an entertaining reminder to turn your phone off, although mine usually goes off before I get in the theatre, saves that awkward shuffle in your seat as you try to get the phone ouyt of your pocket!

SounRAB like you went to a "pretentious arrogant t*at" cinema, can't imagine anyone would dream of taking a call at our indepenant arthouse in Norwich.

I do think it works because you see a lot of people shuffle about checking their mobiles. (where I come from they do lol)

I think anyone who has a mobile on and answers it in the cinemas warrants everyone the right to hit them with popcorn etc. lol:p

No because there are still plently of idiots who use their phones for texting during a film, not seeming to realise how distracting the glow from their phone is for anyone sitting near enough. The adverts should make a point about how people shouldn't text either, though I doubt it would do any good. People are just too selfish/stupid.

I always have mine switched off before I go into the screening. :) But I think all people should have their phones switched off. Hate it when the film's interupted by somebody who's rude enough to have their phone turned on in the cinema

Another problem is that many people don't bother wearing a watch these days either and are always checking their phones to see the time

We had this annoying woman near us when we saw This Is It and every few mins she would open her phone emitting a very bright light.
Its about time the cinemas did something about it, especially in Vue where they claim to use night vision cameras to spy on the audience. They should confront these serial phone users during films and warn them they will be asked to leave in necessary.

I always turn mine off, but just about every time I'm at the cinema I have to ask someone to turn their phone off, so I think there are always going to people who don't take any notice of the aRAB.

If you can't switch your phone off for a couple of hours to watch a film, why bother going to the cinema?

Yeah, me too. I always double check that my phone is on silent when the Orange promo comes on.

The Sigourney Weaver one is a bit stupid. At least she's quite famous though. I'd never heard of Juliette Lewis before the previous one!

Mine goes on silent and stays in my pocket until I get out of the cinema. Cannot bear it when people can't leave their phones alone for a couple hours. My best mate does it all the time, checking her phone every 10 minutes when watching a film - her argument? "In case she misses something"

My phone gets switched off before I go into a movie screening. I think of cinema trips as precious me time and I don't want to be interrupted. That is why we have voicemail.

I agree. However I do like to check email and websites if the film is boring,so I take my phone out with me that never rings as no one has the number for it.

I sit at the back so no one can see the phone screen light up.

Apart from possibly the other people sitting at the back? I've been distracted by the glow of people in the same row as me. It's more intrustive than some might think.

I truly don't understand people who can't live without looking at or touching their phone for a couple of hours. I find it desperately sad, tbh.
