Do they do preliminary hearings/plea bargains if arrested for cocaine possession?

I'm writing a novel and my character gets arrested with cocaine and public intoxication. I'm wondering how the process works (in the states). I have him thrown in jail overnight, dad comes in morning and bails him out, then they wait 2 weeks for preliminary hearing where he plea bargains and gets sentenced to rehab. Is this realistic???

Please keep in mind the 2 weeks in between getting arrested and sent to rehab is crucial for my storyline....I need a way to explain it realistically.
