Do the water pump in side a motor of a 2001 Dodge Caravan cease the motor?

Knocking noise begun first, then to shop same dealer, the water pump is in the motor and needs to be fix . OK I picked the car up and the car hours later cut off! Tow the car over to the dealer for repairs a week ago and no answer why the car wont start at all!
