Do the ramayana & mahabaratha were real stories..?

Someone please help me in knowing whether ramayana, mahabaratha, thriuvilaiyadal etc., were real stories or it was an imagination of the writters ...

if it's not imagination then rama & krishna should be the real kings lived here in world, if so they are kings how come they got such powers .....

please advice me .
