Do people say the "Universe" because the word "God" is too embarrassing or

unfashionable for them? People often say things like "The Universe wants me to do this" or "The Universe will look after me", don't they really mean God but are maybe just not keen on the word because of its historical baggage or because it's sort of not PC? How does this particular idea of the Universe, as opposed to the physical Universe, differ from the idea of God, in a general theistic way rather than a specific Christian, Hindu, Islamic or other theistic faith's view?
