My male kitty is about 8 months old. I adopted him when he was 5 months. He's got his shots/neutered, indoors only & a big mama's boy. In the last week he is pacing around the house making this long, loud, whinny sounding meow, like a cross between a cry and/or howl. He reminds me of a colicy baby. He has plenty of food, clean litter box, love and attention, nor does he seem to be showing any symptoms of pain. He stops when I pick him up and hold him, but just like with a human baby, I can't and don't think I should be doing this every/all the time. The only thing I can think of is that my son has gone for a couple of weeks to visit his dad for the holidays. But the kitty is closer to me than to him?? I'm a new cat mom so I am not sure if this is "normal" or if there is something I am missing. Please advise. Thanks!

Hmmmm even if he is closer to you than your son, he feels something is missing perhaps???? Cats are pretty conscious of when things change and they dont like change. My cats freak when we go on vacation, as soon as they see the suitcases... the meowing, pacing and nervousness show ...... he probably will be okay when your son gets home.... but make sure its not pain or a urinary tract problem... sometimes that is a reason they wander and howl..... and your picking him up does comfort him so he stops...

Good Luck

There are three answers to this..

First - yes it could be because your son is gone and he notices a change..

Second - it could be an infection that is causing discomfort and he is trying to let you know.. his meow could be a prelude to a infection in his urinary tract or his renal tract.. check for blood in/near his feces and check for pink tinged urine (i know its hard) but look closely at the litter.. sometimes you can see left overs of blood.. OR look at him.. look for any red staining near his pee pee or rectal area..

Third - The kicker, there could be a female cat in heat near your house.. pay attention for strays.. he could "smell" her and is trying to call her near..
