do Ipod car adapter work? HELP?

I really want to be able to play my Ipod nano 3rd generation 4gb in my car. My friend has a car adapter that works with his car and i was wondering if there is a certain kind i need to buy and how it works. I know i sound stupid but i have no idea!! I need one on the cheaper side. I saw one on amazon and i wondering if it will work and worth my money or its just a scam
