Do i update then jailbreak/unlock iphone or do I just jailbreak with 3.0

jailbreak/unlock? I have a 2g iphone that has the 2.2 software on it and i want to jailbreak and unlock it. Do i need to update it to 3.0 software first then jailbreak it with the 3.0 jailbreak or can i just start jailbreaking it with 3.0 jailbreak?
