Do I need to take a photo class to be good at photography?

I am really interested in photography. I'm going to get a Lomo camera with a instant attachment and take some cool polariods. My school has a photo class, but I don't have any free periods. I want to get a book to learn about photography more, and film photography. Can I be a good photographer withouta photo class?
