Do I need to pay for internet service when I buy the HTC DROID ERIS from Verizon?

I know that with certain phones, you cannot have a contract without internet, such as blackberries. So I am wondering the same about the new droid eris. If I want to buy this phone to replace my old phone, which has no internet bundle, do I have to pay for internet with the new phone? sorry if that doesnt make sense. ANy help would be great thank you
