Do I need to make my characters talk accurately to the year the story is set in?

My story is set in the 1940s-1950s, a fantasy for YA category...and the primary characters are young adults,too; teenagers. Since the story is for YA, I think I shouldn't make them sound so realistically from that time, but I don't think I ought to make them sound so modern that it becomes rather ridiculous. What do you think I should do?
