Do I need to learn HTML or CSS first?

I am trying to begin a career in web design. I know a very little bit, but I really need to know something. Do I need to learn CSS to understand HTML or do I need to learn HTML to understand CSS?

To answer your question directly as you have asked it, HTML comes first. CSS is used for giving the HTML some formatting.

But usually you would learn both at the same time, not one then the other.

You have to learn first the basic HTML tags before you advance to CSS. CSS enhances your Web Pages but still your foundation is HTML tags.
