does a dirt bike need to be insured if i'm only riding it off road? i.e., no plates, lights, mirrors, etc. also does it need to be registered with the dmv under the same circumstances? i live in nv if that helps. thanks...

Yes. I don't know about registration, but you do need to insure the bike for liability. Any injury to other people or damage to property from using the bike anywhere is your responsibility, and without insurance, it's out of your pocket. You may also want to get fire/theft coverage to protect your investment.

The registration is state by state. Ask your local dmv about that. As for insurance, I think it would b in your best interest to have liability. For example: 5 years ago a kid on a dirt bike hit my wife's jeep. She was at a stop sign and the kid was traveling at a high rate of speed and didn't slow down or even look around for cars b4 jumping the side road. He hit hard and was throne over the rig. He sustained only minor injuries, but caused 4,000 dollars in damage to our jeep. My insurance paid for the repairs, and then sued the kid to get the money back. He lost big time.
