Do I need to declare I studied in France for a working holiday Visa, Canada?

I'm currently filling out a work permit application to get a working holiday visa, Canada.
At one point it asks me if I have lived abroad for longer than six months. If I have I need a criminal check from that country - an expensive and timely process. I did study abroad on an erasmus program 4 years ago but I was never there for more than 5 months at a time without coming back for a week or so. Some people have advised me that studying is not the same as living in a place or being an actual resident. I dont want to lie on my form, so would it be ok to leave out the time which I spent studying in france which was technically one academic year. Any advice on this/websites would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Lance Burt P
