Do I need to charge my lithium ion battery fully before use on cellphone for first time?

I purchased HTC Droid Incredible. When I get the phone, the battery contains a small charge already. I ALWAYS just use the phone until it dies, and then I charge it FULLY before unplugging it. I have been told that it is recommended to charge the battery fully IMMEDIATELY out of box (when it first contains the small charge) before extensive use. Is this necessary? I have never done this yet my batter life on this phone is somewhat poor, but I think it's the battery itself. After all, HTC sells an extended battery which will make your phone a little thicker.

Any ideas? I know its "recommended" to charge fully before use right out of box, but does it actually cause it to have bad battery life? (the first 3-5 times I charge my phone, I let it die completely first).
