Do i need to buy an unlocked phone? HELP! thanks :)?

So i have At&t as my carrier. I need a new phone and want to buy a phone from ebay. It is listed as an At&t phone but does not say it's unlocked. Do I need to buy an unlocked one or will this work okay?
