Do I need to buy a data plan to get the HTC droid eris phone?

Is there anyway i can just get the phone without the data plan and just use it for texting and calling?

Yes you do. The HTC Droid does require a data plan. The lowest one you can get is $29.99 a month. Nope you cannot get the phone for just texting and calling. If you truly do not want a data plan, then don't get a smart phone, PDA phone or blackberry. Get a basic phone instead like the Motorola Rival.
