Do i need my car aerial connected to the stereo for it to work?

I have just bought a JVC KD-R321 and i connected it all up apart from the aerial (I don't have the connector yet) but I don't really use radio anyway and i thought that can wait while the part is being delivered.

the radio didn't turn on or give any sign of life!

My car is a Nissan Micra 93-02

any help would be awesome!
