Do I need credit to get my own cellphone?

Ok, well I'm 19 im going to start working and I would love to get my own cellphone under my name and pay for it because right now it's under my moms name, she pays for it, and I use it. So if decide to start a contract with Sprint, how would I need it? I heard I need credit, how do I do that? What if I get a debit card?
