do i need a patent lawyer and what prevents him from stealing my idea?

Do I need a patent lawyer? what prevents him from stealing my idea? how much does it really end up costing? how long will it last? how long will it take before I get it? if its in the works to be patent... can i show the item to a company in the hopes they will buy it or do i have to wait for the patent to go threw just to make sure they cant steal the idea.

please help
