Do I need a mountain bike or a race bike?

We crashed our only car now I have to be hitching rides to work but I want to get a bike now. My work is 20 miles away and I live out in the country where theres almost nothing but highways to get to the next town. The road to work is pure street but theres no side walk. The thing is if a semi truck decides to take the highway that im taking to work I will probably need to get off the road really quick and get on the dirt road thats in the side of the street so the truck wont hit me. The road also has lil hills that go up and down, so I know that on the way up im gonna have a lil struggle with the bike." Well not the bike but my legs" So what would be a better bike for me to buy mountain bike vs road racing bike with the thinner wheels????
 
mountain bike is so much better, better suspension, larger wheels, more traction, durable, and even long-lasting. Even little rocks can mess up a road bike if the road bike goes bumping over it. In my opinion, you should get a decent mountain bike, around 400-600 price range.
