Do I hire a lawyer in NY or LA?

I used to live in NY. Due to an incident, I was forced to move back home in LA. I would like to take it to court but I do not know where to find a lawyer?
Do I hire a lawyer in NY or do I hire one in LA? I assume that it would cost a lot more if I hire one from LA since the other party is located in NY.
 
If you're the plaintiff, you consult with atty where you live NOW to determine where it would be most convenient for YOU to bring suit. It may be, depending on the nature of your claim, that Texas is the jurisdiction of choice as Texas juries yield such gi-normous damage awards, bless 'em. It's all about convenience. The other side, of course, may object to your choice of jurisidction and argue forum non conveniens. Again, depends on the nature of your action.
